Implementation of Gas Scathe Admonisher and Control System Prototype

By Pallavi Singla Prashant Jain Roop Pahuja

DOI:, Pub. Date: 8 Mar. 2017

With the advent of and rapidly increasing use of organic, chemical, hazardous, non-hazardous, natural and man-made gases into various industrial processes like food processing industries, oil and gas sector, domestic usage and etc., the detection of sophisticated gas leakage system has become a concern and need of the hour. Chernobyl and Bhopal gas tragedies are some of the horrible examples that lay the foundations for the significance of this project. This paper is based on working model of an automated, low-cost, simple design, computer-based embedded instrumentation system, which can detect leakage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas and Carbon Dioxide Gas in surrounding environment using fast and accurate gas sensing technologies and then provide control action over the surrounding using final control elements to maintain the gas concentration within levels that human body can bear. To accomplish this objective a Graphical User Interface has been developed on LabVIEWTM that is interfaced with the gas sensor modules through Arduino (controller and data acquisition device) to track the real-time gas concentration and energize actuator mechanism to lower down the concentration by turning ON exhaust fans and hence perform function of a 'Control System'. The controlling action is effective and the results are promising. The energizing action is further used to generate alarms of gas leakage and hence this paper is aptly entitled as 'Gas Scathe Admonisher'. Data Acquisition System used in this process overcomes the human intervention and increases the overall efficiency and safety of the system. The Graphical User Interface with detailed information of prototype makes it useful for teaching purposes in laboratories for experimentation.

Real-Time Fuel Quality Monitoring System for Smart Vehicles

By Prerit Saxena Roop Pahuja Manmeet Singh Khurana Sumrit Satija

DOI:, Pub. Date: 8 Nov. 2016

A novel method of monitoring the quality i.e. the percentage of purity of diesel fuel in real-time environment in smart vehicles is presented here. The method incorporates temperature compensated density measurement using a dual load cell and temperature sensor. The mass of the small fixed volume of diesel sample and temperature of diesel are measured by the pre-calibrated load cell based amplifier set up and a smart miniature temperature sensor respectively. The amplified voltage of the load cell provides the measure of the density of the fuel. Further, the measured value of fuel density is temperature compensated and compared with standard reference values to indicate percentage of purity of the diesel sample. The method is automated with an intelligent virtual instrument that provides all the means of testing the fuel sample and displaying results with high level of accuracy ~ 99.8 %. The model offers a way of providing vital real time information to user and has great future prospects. Also, the data collected can be analyzed for developing complex mathematical models to suggest optimized driving parameters for vehicles.

Web-enabled Simulated and Remote Control Virtual Laboratory of Transducer

By Vaibhav Gautam Roop Pahuja

DOI:, Pub. Date: 8 Apr. 2015

In the era of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), virtual laboratories in the field of engineering and sciences have gained popularity, as a smart way of imparting practical and theoretical education. This paper discusses the realization of web-enabled simulated and remote control virtual laboratory of transducer based on one of the modular transducer kit/trainer commonly used in conducting experiments in Instrumentation and Control Engineering curriculum or related fields. Using component-based modeling methods, apparatus/devices used in a particular transducer experiment been have accurately modeled and assembled virtually. The virtual experiment panel mimics the functionality and physical appearance of the actual experimental set up. It provides various options to study and simulate the experiment by varying the input signal or device parameters. The remote control lab facility is also provided that enables the user to remotely perform the experiment on the kit. The experiment is interfaced to PC using suitable data acquisition system. Interactive virtual panel with web-cam connectivity is implemented and published on the web. It allows the user to control the set up and perform the experiment interactively; acquire and analyze real-time data and capture online view of the physical experimental setup remotely. The outcome of this work is the virtualization of transducer based experiments and development of integrated educational tool with high level of pedagogical effectiveness and technical support.
